Khmer Rouge Tribunal Fellowship Programme – Promotion of Constitutionality and Peace in Cambodia
Training and hands-on experience at the Khmer Rouge Tribunal for graduates of the Royal School of Judges and Prosecutors (RSJP) and staff of NGOs in coming-to-terms and reconciliation

Overview:
In 2006, the Cambodian Government set up the Khmer Rouge Tribunal (also known as  “Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia”, ECCC) in cooperation with the United Nations. 28 years after the rule of the Khmer Rouge came to an end those mainly responsible for the regime’s crimes against the Cambodian people are to be brought to trial. This is an ambitious and significant, if not entirely uncontroversial, step in the country’s coming-to-terms with the violent crimes committed during the time of the Khmer Rouge. Beyond the tribunal, the population’s need for coming-to-terms and reconciliation process is considerable. The mediators need to comprehend the historical context and to be aware of various mechanisms of reconciliation and coming-to-terms. In addition, it is also necessary to obtain information on the tribunal’s procedures and the progress made. By providing training and hands-on experience at the Khmer Rouge Tribunal to candidates for judges coming out of the Royal School of Judges and Prosecutors (RSJP) they are prepared for their future professional legal work. In addition, staff of the Documentation Centre of Cambodia (DC-Cam) and other non-governmental organizations is trained for their work in the coming-to-terms and reconciliation process in Cambodia.
